SAGITTARIUS PONDEROSA HISTORICAL EXCAVATION
Just as a tree needs strong roots to be nourished and to stand strong, a play relies upon historical antecedents to shape and inform what it is. Use the links at the top of the page to learn about the “roots” of Sagittarius Ponderosa that I explored: magical realism, American puppetry, and gender performance.

Sagittarius Ponderosa tells the story of Archer, a genderqueer adult, as he returns home to care for his ailing father, despite his family’s non-acceptance (or, perhaps, blissful ignorance). Through the play, Archer learns important lessons about love, identity, loss, and what’s in a name.
The play was published in 2021 by NYC-based trans playwright MJ Kaufman. This and their other plays highlight the trans experience, and have been produced at the Public Theatre, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, and other companies. Learn more about Kaufman and their work here.
